Obsession...
Check out Hannah's progress with KC. It's become an obsession. Hysterical laughter when she sees her (notice tears in her eyes).
Signing her version of "kitty" and looking pathetic, because she can't reach her. (The sign is to pull fingers away from the face like whiskers....Hannah pinches her cheek instead.)
Learning that I need a faster shutter speed. These are all soft. Hannah is definitely on the go!

Snow Day, Pt. 2...
Wasn't Kara great to wear her red coat on that day? We tried making a snow man...no go...too powdery. So we played with snow throwing...very Mary Tyler Moore, don't you think? (The big gloves crack me up...they're Bob's). Which do you prefer?
Loved these Nandina berries too...Is there anything prettier than red in the snow??

Snow Day, Pt. 1...
Bob was patient and let me take pics before he cleared our walkways. It was hard for him, but he did it! I love a hard-workin' man!
And afterwards we were able to treat him to some of Kara's homemade potato soup. She'd made it for a school function, which was canceled. So we got to eat it. Not too sorry about that!

Splash of color...
Less than a week after our fun walk with the wagon, we got freezing temperatures with a snow/ice mix. Four days of school closings! Many of my students still managed to make it to lessons tho' and, when Julia showed up in fun boots, I HAD to get a picture! Don't they just make you want to smile?
BTW...it was almost exactly a year ago that I took my first shots on manual. Those were in snow also. Still working on getting a good exposure. What do you think ladies...does it still look gray? There's such a fine line between gray and blown out.

It's confidential...
365 day challenge was "numbers". That was a hard one for me. Tried a bunch of stuff, then got this idea. The numbers only I'm allowed to see:
Thought I was being really original until I remembered something I had seen in Lisa's archives. Have to give credit where it's due. It's not exactly the same, but definitely inspired by Lisa's creative shot.

Maiden "voyage"...
We had a beautiful day mid-January and it was thankfully on Grammy day! Took a walk with Hannah's new wagon. What a fun afternoon! Hannah LOVED it!
Think this is the first ever pic with both Jenny AND Hannah smiling. Hannah had just sneezed, which made her giggle. So I fake sneezed to keep her going. Wonder how long that will work?

I see you...
Hannah's odd fearful fascination with the cat continues. She really is making progress tho'. She goes from laughter to whining without any provocation from KC. It's cute but weird! She is so conflicted! :) Still, she follows KC mercilessly until KC begs to go out. And ...she watches.
Which do you prefer? Jenny likes color...I think I like B/W. Oh yeah...what do you think of those pigtails? 3 strands of hair and 2 big ribbons! :) This was an experiment (failed) on what to do with the mullet she seems to be growing. :) Ten minutes later, she pulled them out...along with a few of those precious hairs. We won't be trying that again till she has more to spare!

Just do it!
I don't plan to post all the pics from the 365 project, but will post some I thought were fun...including some "rejects". We're only allowed to post one pic for each challenge, but sometimes I toy with more than one idea. I'm learning a lot and trying new things. Some days are really hard...like when the challenge is "parking garage". Seriously? But topics are very open to interpretation and it's fun trying to think of unique ways to communicate ideas. The word on this day was "work". Time to stop procrastinating and just do it!

Memory lane...
Well, my post about the smocking project made me want to show you the original dress I made. I never posted these before...not sure why. Probably because I kept hoping to take the definitive photograph and never really got it. At any rate, I've been editing old pics for Hannah's annual photo book and came across these in the dress (taken in Aug). I played around with vignettes and decided I liked them better than the originals. Vignettes aren't really my thing, but here the vintage look seemed to fit. Still no definitive photograph, but I love these....mostly because I love Hannah! Do you have a favorite?

Great "egg"spectations...Pt. 1
OK, I borrowed the corny title. It seemed appropriate for my next project....Hannah's Easter dress. Before she was born, I smocked a dress for her dedication. Kim asked me then to explain what smocking is. It's kind of hard to describe, so I thought I'd post pics periodically to show my progress...good shooting practice for me and hopefully a better explanation for Kim. Here goes.
First step is selecting the pattern, fabric, smocking design, etc. Hopefully these supplies will turn into a cute little dress over the next couple of months. The pic on the left is the dress pattern and the duck picture is the design I'll smock. Check out the cute little duck buttons too. :)
After cutting the dress front to the appropriate length, I have to roll it up on a dowel rod to make it easier to feed it through my pleater.
What's a pleater? ...this handy little machine with rows of threaded needles. I feed the fabric through slowly and carefully, being sure to keep the top edge even with one of the needles and it folds the fabric into tiny little pleats. Those pleats will become the "canvas" for my smocking design.
I'm not sure when I'll post Pt. 2 or how many posts there will be, but stay tuned. I'll show you my progress along the way.

What goes up...
...must not necessarily come down. Hannah finally learned how to pull up on the furniture a few weeks ago, but getting down was a whole other story. :) She rarely cried when she woke up in her crib, until recently...Jenny would find her standing in there, frustrated that she couldn't sit down. :) Happy to report she knows how now!

It's grand being me...
Hannah was exploring the other day and caught sight of her reflection in the glass on the stereo. She stopped immediately and waved hello to herself. :) Then she experimented with other motions...touching her belly, her head, etc., watching the baby in the glass do the same. Finally she threw her arms up over her head in this expression of pure joy. Love it!

Feline phobia...
You may remember Hannah's sudden fear of Monkey a few months ago. It spread to KC and all things furry. For months, we've been avoiding the cat, but that was getting us nowhere, so I finally decided to try working with Hannah. After a nap and lunch (full and rested), I held Hannah on my lap while I pet KC. I just kept saying "sweet kitty...nice kitty...soft kitty"...and Hannah whimpered the whole time. All the whining was stressing KC out, so she finally jumped to the floor. I said "Kitty's going bye bye"...and Hannah frantically waved bye bye...evidently relieved! :) That seemed like a good first step...no real crying...so we called it a success and planned to try again another day. We went to the living room to play and KC stayed in the family room.
We really thought that would be the end of it, but Hannah had other ideas. She kept crawling to a spot where she could see KC, whining all the time. She totally surprised us by pursuing her...She clearly wanted to touch her! Now mind you, she was whining hysterically the whole time. As you can see, KC had no interest in baby fingers and kept walking away. Hannah followed her through 4 rooms! Finally, Jenny put out a few pieces of cat food so KC would stay still. Hannah actuallypet (slapper) her a couple times! We were totally amazed and amused by the whole scene. Hannah really seemed to want to push past her fear, but obviously had mixed emotions!
BTW...every time Hannah comes over, we're working on this. She's making good progress!! Stay tuned...

"I love you, Grammy"...
No, she's not fixin' to pick her nose or doing the Texas Tech "Guns Up" sign either! :) She's giving me a quick "I love you" in the middle of a diaper change. I'm amazed at how quickly she's picking up new signs. This one's a little challenging, so she usually does this variation (without raising her pinky)..and she usually does it with both hands too. :) She can tell by my tone of voice when I'm going to tell her I love her and responds with the sign before the words are out of my mouth. Jenny says she'll frequently stop playing to flash her a quick "love you" sign too. Priceless!

I is for...
Invert....
I decided to join a 365 day photography project recently. I know, I need another project like I need a hole in the head. Duly noted....but, after more than a week without even picking up my camera, I decided I might need a little inspiration. Every day a challenge is issued. My participation will probably be hit or miss, but when I have time I plan to play along. This pic was from the challenge of "things that begin with the letter I". My original thought was to aim for "infiltrate" by dropping some food coloring into water. As I was setting up tho', I placed my pitcher on the windowsill and got this surprise...an inverted reflection of our front yard and street. Voila! I is for Invert!Sunday, February 6, 2011

On the road again...
If only we could have clicked our ruby slippers together and chanted, "There's no place like home". :) Unfortunately, the road is just as long both ways. We do always enjoy driving through the Texas Canyon (near Benson, AZ) tho'. Actually got out to take one pic and man, it was COLD!!! That wind cuts right through you! Lost a glove there somewhere too. Let me know if you see it! :)
Didn't take many pics on the way home, but love the scenery near Ruidoso, New Mexico. Especially beautiful with snow (even with the blown out sky). Hard to believe we could drive through those 2 extremes in one day.

More party pics...
Bob's brother Gilbert and granddaughter Emma, who was feeling shy...
It was my first time to meet Gilbert's 5 year old twin grandchildren, Zoe and Linkin (Melissa's kids)....adorable!There were SO many other cute kids there, but I didn't even try for pics. They were busy playing in a small space with poor light and I wasn't feeling adventuresome. At any rate, we REALLY loved being with everyone!
